Russian Laws to Restrain Fur Trade Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 April 2006
suitcase

The end of the so called "suitcase-trade" is routed by the Russian government. According to the latest legislation the travellers from Russia on their return trip, must carry with them merchandise valued 530$ or less, otherwise they will have to pay taxes. The previous limit was 2300$. Also, the carrying limit from 50 kilos per passenger is now reduced to 35. The new law is very discouraging for Fur trade as Russian tourists spend a lot of money in purchasing brand new furs from the Mediterranean countries  they visit, such as Greece, Italy and Spain which they carry back home with their luggage.

In the 90’s, thanks to the "suitcase-trade" the Russians laid their hands on foreign products especially home machinery and clothing. It is estimated that it covers 20 – 30% of the imports of clothing and shoes to the country. This was also a usual practise of traders who were actually purchasing their stock this way and then resold it.  Some criticize the new measures as they believe they will only help corruption at the custom offices grow, as travellers who passed freely before will now have to negotiate with the customs inspectors the luck of the products they are carrying.
