Fur design course at Chinese university |

After its inauguration in January this year, the Tsinghua University-Kopenhagen Fur Studio unveils its first fur design course. Backed by piles of quality lots and samples as well as professional fur tools and machines, Kopenhagen Fur product development manager Thomas Andersen and colleague Annette Traberg Thomsen spent three days inducting 20 Tsinghua students to the wonderful world of fur. The students are juniors and graduate students of the Department of Textile and Fashion Design.
- This if the first  time I work with a mink skin, says graduate student Liu Jie. - It’s a wonderful fabric that gives such a different feel than other fabrics. With fur it’s easy to create rich and luxurious texture. After Thomas has explained some of the techniques, and as I get my hands on the skins, more and more ideas pop up in my head.
- It’s fun working with fur, said another student, Xu Yiwei. - Last year I took part in a fur design competition in China and all I needed to do was to send in my sketch and the organizers found manufacturers to produce for me. After this course, I will be much better prepared for a fur design competition. I think fur as full coat is already a very mature product and now the focus should be on accessories. For the Chinese young people, a fur accessory will be very popular with trendy young people with shallow pockets, she adds.
- When I step in the studio, I have the feeling that I’m in the studio of a big fashion company because the feeling is so good, says Professor Wang Yue of the Department of Textile and Fashion Design.
The studio and the course also have the support of Kopenhagen Fur’s Chinese customers who appreciate the company’s efforts in educating Chinese fur designers.
